What is Technology Assessment in Health (HTA)?

HTA is a set of research methods used to verify whether a particular health technology (like a drug, device, prosthesis, a new type of surgery, a more advanced diagnostic test or implement a new model of care unit) is safe, effective and affordable in comparison to other treatment alternatives. The purpose of HTA is to assist managers of public health systems and further to make rational decisions in choosing which technologies should be available in planning and resource allocation.
The HTA is characterized by being a multidisciplinary area, where different professionals (like doctors, engineers, economists, statisticians, mathematicians and scientists with other backgrounds) work together to review existing research on the safety and efficacy of a particular technology health or to produce new studies, when there is no convincing evidence on the performance of a treatment.
